According to one survey, labiaplasty – a cosmetic procedure improving the appearance of elongated or large inner vulva lips – has high rates of patient satisfaction.
The survey was distributed to plastic surgeons who are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The study was designed to look at things like the effectiveness of different labiaplasty techniques, as well as outcomes and patient satisfaction. Of the 750 surgeons who responded to the survey, the average patient satisfaction rate reported was more than 95 percent for all techniques, and there was no significant statistical difference when comparing the satisfaction rates among the different techniques.
Women with large inner vulva lips, or “labia minora,” often feel embarrassed or dissatisfied with the appearance of their genitalia. In addition to aesthetic concerns, enlarged and elongated labia minora may lead to:
- Discomfort while exercising
- Discomfort while walking or sitting down
- Dissatisfaction with your appearance in lingerie and swimsuits
- Interference with sexual activity
Labia minora reduction surgery provides a way to rejuvenate the genital area, creating a proportionate and symmetrical shape.

Tummy tucks for men in Britain rose 15 percent last year, representing the largest rise in demand for all plastic surgery procedures in Britain last year. Similar to trends in the UK, plastic surgery among men has become increasingly popular inAmerica over recent years.
Like liposuction for men, tummy tucks define body contours by eliminating excess, saggy fat and tissue. A tummy tuck may be especially beneficial for men following:
- Weight loss
- Bariatric surgery
- Intensive exercise regimen that does not eliminate isolated pockets of fat
If you have been unable to achieve a sculpted abdominal area despite your best efforts, a tummy tuck removes the skin and fat that sags around the abdomen, resulting in a tighter, firmer abdominal appearance.
Tummy tucks are especially popular after weight loss. After losing the pounds, you may be left with sagging skin that, unfortunately, does not disappear along with the weight. It may be discouraging to see this physical result after your dedication to weight loss, and a tummy tuck can provide the sculpting power necessary to reveal the tone and muscle mass beneath.

A recent New York Times article titled “Ear Doctors Performing Face-Lifts? It happens,” addresses the increasing number of doctors providing plastic surgery procedures to their patients, regardless of the fact that the doctors are not specialists in plastic surgery.
Because elective cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance, doctors can conveniently charge their patients an out-of-pocket cost without the disappointment of a low insurance reimbursement.
So, is there anything wrong with receiving liposuction from an ear, nose and throat doctor? Not necessarily, but the risks of receiving surgery from a non-specialist include:
- Unsatisfactory results. Even though a doctor may have surgical experience, satisfactory results are better guaranteed when performed by a doctor experienced in that specific procedure. A knowledgeable and talented ophthalmologist may not have the experience necessary to provide satisfactory breast augmentation results.
- Inadequate or unsafe surgical facilities. Surgeries performed outside of an accredited surgical facility may be poorly equipped in the event that an emergency arises. If a complication arises during surgery, proper emergency medical equipment is critical to preventing injury and death.
There are no laws or regulations requiring doctors to practice within the field in which they are trained or board certified.
A surgeon board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery has completed training devoted to the specialty of plastic surgery, and has completed rigorous oral and written examinations pertaining to plastic surgery.

For many brides-to-be, feeling beautiful and confident is an essential part of the wedding day. In addition to exercising, eating right and finding the perfect dress, some brides achieve aesthetic improvements with plastic surgery procedures. Some of the most popular cosmetic procedures among brides-to-be include:
These procedures can define the contours of your body and face, reduce facial signs of aging, and improve the appearance of sagging breasts.
Some women lose a significant amount of weight prior to their wedding date. While this weight loss can be a great way to look and feel better, some women are left with sagging skin from weight loss. A tummy tuck effectively removes droopy skin hanging from the midriff area.
In other cases of weight loss, women achieve the contours they want, but isolated pockets of fat remain. Despite your best efforts, these areas of fat do not respond to diet, exercise, or any number of crunches. Liposuction removes the fat cells in these areas, letting you achieve a firmer body.

Recently, there have been a number of news stories about unlicensed surgeons performing plastic surgery procedures on unsuspecting victims. These tragic cases are a reminder of the importance of choosing a plastic surgeon who is qualified and experienced, and who cares for your safety and wellbeing.
Last year, a woman came forward claiming a surgeon injected her buttocks with cement and tire sealant during a buttocks augmentation. Since she made this claim, other victims have come forward. The woman performing the surgeries turned out to be unlicensed.
In October, 2011, a married Columbian couple was convicted for their part in causing the death of a woman who received a buttock augmentation in the back room of a tile store.
More recently, a woman was arrested in New York for performing an illegal cosmetic eyelid surgery. The woman told police she is licensed to practice plastic surgery in China, but not in the United States.
Unlicensed, untrained plastic surgeons often attract these victims with low price tags. Patients put their safety at risk when sacrificing the surgeon’s credibility for savings. If you have found a plastic surgeon you like, but are discouraged by cost, talk to the surgeon about financing. There may be several options to help you plan for the cost of plastic surgery.
If you are considering plastic surgery, carefully research your options. During a consultation with a prospective plastic surgeon, you should ask about the surgeon’s:
- Board certification
- Experience
- State-of-the-art technology
- Former patient testimonials
Finding an experienced, qualified plastic surgeon who prioritizes your safety is an important step toward pursuing a plastic surgery procedure.

This past month, France urged 30,000 women to remove their breast implants, which were manufactured by the now defunct company Poly Implants Protheses (PIP) – the company was closed down because its silicone implants contained industrial silicone, instead of medical-grade silicone. The breast implants also seem to be more likely to rupture.
The PIP breast implants were sold in Western Europe, South America and Australia. About 40,000 British women have PIP breast implants, and Britain has suggested women consider removing the breast implants due to a high risk of failure; both Britain and France maintain there is no proven link between the ruptured PIP breast implants and a higher risk of cancer.
There is no indication PIP implants have ever been used in a US breast surgery. PIP breast implants were never approved for use in the US; however, American women who traveled to foreign countries, particularly South America, for breast enlargement could conceivably have PIP breast implants.
When your health is at stake, selecting an approved medical device is important. While French officials investigate just how the faulty PIP breast implants made their way into the market and into the bodies of hundreds of thousands of women worldwide, the event is an opportunity to revisit the importance of choosing your procedure and your surgeon carefully. Although PIP implants are not offered in the US, you should always select an experienced plastic surgeon offering approved silicone breast implants from Mentor Corporation or Allergan, the two companies approved to provide silicone breast implants in the US.

If you are under 50, now may be the time to consider a facelift. The results may be better, and you may be more satisfied with the results achieved for many years after the procedure.
In a recent study published in the January 2012 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the satisfaction rates of facelift recipients were compared. The doctors conducting the study assessed both short-term and long-term satisfaction of facelift patients, and then they looked at the satisfaction rates among three age groups: younger than 50, 50 to 60, and over 60.
The study seems to suggest that younger facelift patients – those with “early or minimal signs of facial aging” – experience better results and continue to be satisfied with those results at least a decade later. The facelift patients older than age 60 reported lower satisfaction scores. Although these patients tended to look younger than their peers, their facelift results were not as good as those of patients under 50.
If you are under 50, you may be considering non-surgical cosmetic treatments to stave off the facial signs of aging. Non-surgical options like BOTOX® and facial fillers effectively reduce wrinkles and other indications of aging; however, as a younger person you may greatly benefit from a facelift. Although your facial signs of aging may be minimal, a facelift may provide long-lasting results for at least a decade into the future.

As the New Year approaches, many people will make a resolution to lose weight. Although many New Year’s resolutions fly out the window around mid January, some people have been working toward weight loss all year. If you have been shedding pounds, you may want to consider fine-tuning the aesthetic result with a tummy tuck.
Losing weight reduces your risk of heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Weight loss can also improve body image and self-esteem.
After all the hard work and dedication going into weight loss, it can be disappointing to see the sagging skin that results. Although you will enjoy the health benefits of not being overweight, drooping excess skin is most likely not the aesthetic outcome for which you were hoping. In this situation, a tummy tuck can achieve several things, including:
- Smoother, more defined body contour.
- Removal of remaining excess fat.
- Removal of sagging, excess skin.
- Tightening of abdominal muscles.
At the Cosmetic Surgical Center, Dr. Vasdev Rai provides an endoscopic tummy tuck, resulting in a rapid recovery with minimal scarring and bruising.
A tummy tuck may be the most effective way for you to achieve a tauter, smoother tummy in 2012.
If you live in Dallas, Texas or the surrounding area and would like to learn more about tummy tucks, please contact experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Vasdev Rai at the Cosmetic Surgical Center to schedule a consultation.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Generation X accounts for a larger portion of plastic surgery consumers than the Baby Boomers. In the coming years, the plastic surgery demand among Generation X is likely to increase.
Baby Boomers – people born between 1946 and 1964 – made up 28 percent of the total 2010 cosmetic surgeries and procedures, according to ASAPS. Generation X – people born between 1965 and 1979 – accounted for 43 percent. Interestingly, there are fewer people belonging to Generation X than to the Baby Boom generation.
The high demand for plastic surgery in the Gen X age group may stem from several sources:
- Today, there may be more pressure to look young, especially in the workplace. This pressure may be real and acted upon by supervisors and managers, or it may be perceived by employees surrounded by younger coworkers. Regardless, many plastic surgery patients report that a rejuvenated appearance can boost self-confidence and make your inner energy and vigor outwardly apparent at work.
- Gen X celebrities in their 40s maintain a youthful, refreshed appearance. Many people who are the same age as celebrities like Catherine Zeta Jones and Jennifer Aniston may desire a similarly youthful look. Although you should have realistic expectations of what plastic surgery can achieve, these celebrities exemplify what is possible with today’s leading surgeons.
- Generation X is more accepting of plastic surgery. Past generations may have certain perceptions of plastic surgery. Today, people are less likely to feel embarrassed about their cosmetic procedures. According to a recent ASAPS survey, 67 percent of Americans would not be embarrassed if family and friends knew they had plastic surgery.
Plastic surgery has made it possible for a multitude of people from many generations to achieve an outward appearance reflecting inner youthfulness and vivacity.

A facelift is a great way to restore a more youthful facial appearance. As we age, facial skin begins to droop downward, resulting in a number of undesirable effects. A facelift helps reverse the facial signs of aging.
There is not really a best age for a facelift. Most patients seeking the procedure are in their 40s or 50s, but older and younger people may also be candidates for a facelift. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), people age 55 and older made up 66 percent of facelift patients in 2010. People from age 40 to 54 made up 32 percent, while those aged 30 to 39 made up only 2 percent.
Typically, people younger than 30 do not need a facelift. At this age, facial skin is taut and has not begun to sag. People aged 20 to 29 did not make up any portion of facelift patients in the ASPS data.
Instead of basing your decision only on your age, there are several factors you should consider, including:
- Facial characteristics
- Desired aesthetic outcome
- Financial stability
- Current medical conditions
- Current overall health
Around the mid-40s, people begin to display facial signs of aging. People from age 40 to 80 have sought facelifts to correct:
- Deep “nasolabial folds,” which are the creases running from your nose down toward your mouth.
- Drooping skin around your jaw, which are known as “jowls.”
- Sagging skin underneath your chin.
- Cheeks that droop downward.
- Sagging turkey neck.
Although the best age for a facelift ultimately depends on many factors, receiving the procedure in your 40s may be a good choice. In your 40s and early 50s, your skin retains some elasticity, which can provide better results that last longer than if you receive a facelift in your mid-60s and beyond.
To find out if you are a facelift candidate, please contact experienced Dallas, Texas plastic surgeon Dr. Vasdev Rai at the Cosmetic Surgical Center to schedule a consultation.
